Tom M @RT77934561 Jul 3, 2025 A low key, downbeat kind of movie with dashes of hope. Jermaine Clement has almost made a career of playing these put upon, under a cloud, but essentially really nice fellows. We've been here before but it is quite engaging, Elliot Gould notwithstanding. Adults interact throughout but it is presented like it is aimed at an 11 year old audience. Just a very weird attempt at telling a story or making a movie. Elliot Gould is not very good in his role. Jemaine Clement is good, but he floats through it at a consistently medium level. The premise is a stretch and how the main character confronts the problems he faces is not even slightly believable. None of it is believable really. A weak comedy that literally relies on old jokes for laughs, misplaced syrupy music, and goofy montages. Like a bad rom com with no rom. Skip it. I would have if I'd known better. See more Feb 6, 2021 Good movie, some good dad jokes. See more Jan 24, 2019 Touching and cheerful. See more Jul 1, 2018 Believable, touching performances. My husband noted that some plot points were very predictable, but we agreed when the acting, dialogue, and story are good, that doesn't matter. I liked that the older people were real, multidimensional characters, not just gags. There were some genuinely funny moments, though for me (and presumably many people of my generation and younger), the laughs were not in response to the specific borscht belt-type Jokes sprinkled throughout the script and generally voiced by Elliot Gould...on the other hand, I can only assume my dad (and any of his friends) would guffaw at those if/when this gets wider release, but I imagine it will, and I would recommend it to viewers of pretty much all ages. On a side note, I am a Jemaine Clement fan regardless, but glad to say his accent was good. It was also a treat to see Annie Potts again. See more Read all reviews
