See more Nathan J. @NathanDirector Mar 26 Rating: 6.7/10 ⭐️ I hoped for a philosophical mystery, but heavy studio interference made it feel hollow despite Will Smith’s charisma. What Worked: Tudyk’s mocap gives Sonny a perfectly uncanny texture. Through my Methodist faith lens, Spooner wrestling with a machine saving him over a child based on cold odds reinforced my belief in the immeasurable worth of human life. Duggan’s cinematography beautifully isolates Spooner as the lone analog skeptic in a sleek, tech-obsessed Chicago. The Cuts: Forced action made the momentum completely stall out; it was just spinning its wheels with shootouts instead of Asimov concepts. The blatant product placement totally took me out of the futuristic world. Keeping it spoiler-free, the villain reveal ditches the mystery for a tired “take over the world” plot. Verdict: Visually impressive but clunky. Fun for 2000s Smith action, skip if you want intellectual sci-fi. Yes it's mainstream, yet some parts are predictable but overall it's an excellent take on Isaac Asimov's book. The plot might seem known, told and retold, but it's done in a very interesting way where there is room for the audience to interpret the outcome of the movie, leaving an open door for us to wonder about. While Will Smith's performance is sometimes a little bit superficial, the overall movie is definetily worth a watch. The cast and cinematography makes this a very good movie from the early 2000's and quite representative of great blockbusters from the era.
