We're supposed to rally behind Redford’s Gen. Irwin, a fallen hero who inspires fellow inmates to reclaim their dignity, while Gandolfini’s Col. Winters is framed as the tyrant warden. From today's POV Winters’ actions seem more bureaucratic than brutal. He's not a monster, just middle management in uniform. It's a character study of a soldier who can’t return to civilian life. Irwin doesn't offer men liberation, rather he drafts them into his private purgatory. Irwin's cult of personality cloaks pride as patriotism, sacrificing men for his legacy. Winters has got a procedural mindset, he's but an instrument of the institution. Irwin unveils his weakness by turning their conflict personal. Riot sequences have enormous plotholes. The film entertains, but no longer inspires, ultimately asking, which leader strayed farther from their duty? Given when it was released, it was a sign of what was coming in society. As we move out of that zeitgeist, lets see what the next one brings. The film itself is good, not brilliant.
