What Worked: • As an indie director, I respect Hooper’s choice for live singing; it feels super authentic. • Hathaway is breathtaking. Pouring her soul into Fantine totally earned her that Oscar. • Redmayne starting “Empty Chairs” a cappella brilliantly highlighted his intense grief. The Friction: • Crowe’s singing as Javert honestly felt stiff next to the Broadway heavyweights. • The extreme close-ups got overwhelming; I honestly just wanted to see the wide sets. • The pacing really dragged for me during the big time jumps. Verdict: Watch for a sweeping, emotional musical. Skip if sung dialogue or shaky cams annoy you.
