The story is that of a a classic Damsel in distress situation, where our main character Lupin (III) comes to town for a heist and ends up entangled with the inner secrets of the city. It’s definitely one of the Greats of all time of heist and mystery. Stylized, dapper and mystic, well scored musically, as smooth as it was when I first saw Arsene Lupin III as a kid. I had no idea there was over 50 years of anime history behind this guy. I watched this film because I saw that it was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and I was a huge Studio Ghibli fan. Turns out Miyazaki had a really good directorial debut. This is a great film; it does not detract from his legacy but enhances it. It likewise adds to the prestige of Lupin. After watching this film, I sought out and watched a lot more Lupin material. There is no shortage of Lupin content, the man has 5 TV series and approximately 40 movies. So, no, I have not seen all of them, but I have seen quite a bit. Lupin the Third is a master thief, who relishes in the challenge of getting the next big score. He is accompanied by his best friend Jigen, and a samurai named Goemon. On their misadventures they frequently stumble into a femme fatal named Fujiko. And the whole gang is constantly pursued by Inspector Zenigate of Interpol. I've now watched this film a few different times, and with 3 different dubs. I will first review as a movie fan and then as a Lupin fan. This movie is a ton of fun and holds up very well for being as old as it is. The action is creative and exciting. The titular castle is an excellent blend of old and new. The story has the right balance of humor and suspense. It is the type of swash buckling adventure that capitalizes on the medium of animation doing things that just wouldn't work in live action. The characters work very well off each other and are just a joy to watch. The character of Lupin has a lot of shades of James Bond and Indiana Jones. Granted the latter didn't come out until after Lupin. It's no wonder that there are so many different Lupin III adventures, they are an easy group to write entertaining adventures for. On the negative side, there is some cartoonish physics that lowers any feeling of peril the characters are going through. The movie has some leaps in logic that do not add up. The ending feels like there is some unseen force, making sure that the status quo is returned. It is the inevitable downside to being a long running series, is that the characters have to go back to doing the same old things. As a Lupin fan I can tell you that Jigen and Goemon don't have enough to do in the story. Fujiko and Zenigate have their time to shine. And the damsel does her job just fine, but since she spends so much of the movie either captured or crying, she does come across as a little flat. In summary, the thief has gotten away with another crime. He has stolen my heart.
