A maverick cop, Callahan, investigates the slaying of some of the West Coast's most powerful criminals. Dismissing the theory that the murders are the result of underworld squabbling, Callahan learns that each of the victims was killed by a slug from a.357 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and a weapon widely used by the San Francisco Police Department.

Magnum Force ups the ante for the Dirty Harry franchise with faster action and thrilling stuntwork.

A tall, cold cod like Eastwood removes the last pretensions to humane feelings from the action melodrama, making it an impersonal, almost abstract exercise in brutalization.

Magnum Force is not a good movie, though it does provide a fine example of the gratuitous homophobia that seemed a mandatory element in every Clint Eastwood movie at the time.

Not even Eastwood's presence as the muddy cop, who certainly has his intense moments, prevents this sequel of 'Dirty Harry' from having a light and distinctly conventional result. [Full review in Spanish]

With a villain who remains a mystery for the majority of the picture, victims who deserve to die, and inconsequential supporting roles, there's little suspense or concern.

Magnum Force (1973) The Death Squad (12,653 – 31 Aug 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) In São Francisco, the mobster Ricca (Richard Devon) is declared non-guilt for a murder in court, under the protest of the population. When his accomplices and he are driving home, they are stopped by a motorcycle cop stops and kills them. Lt. Briggs (Hal Holbrook) assigns Harry Calahan (Clint Eastwood) and his partner Earlington "Early" Smith (Felton Perry) to investigate the case. Soon there is another killing and Briggs, who has a beef with Calahan, blames him. Calahan meets four rookies that are good shooters and when another criminal is murdered, he suspect the quartet is involved. "Magnum Force" (1973) is the second movie of Dirty Harry, with the story of a death squad in San Francisco PD. The plot is gripping with shootings and car chases, and Clint Eastwood repeats his role. My vote is eight. Title (Brazil): "Magnum .44"

It isn't nearly as good as the original, but it's okay.

Magnum Force stands tall as one of the very best entries in the iconic Dirty Harry series. This film is a masterclass in gritty, action-packed cinema that questions the very system it defends. The plot brilliantly exposes a critical flaw in the law: when technicalities and loopholes allow vicious criminals to walk free without punishment. Into this moral vacuum steps a new kind of threat, forcing Inspector Harry Callahan to confront vigilante justice even more extreme than his own. Clint Eastwood is, as always, the legendary embodiment of cool, steely resolve. The movie delivers the best action and the most memorable gunfights of the franchise, solidifying its status as a timeless classic. It’s a raw, uncompromising thriller that remains utterly gripping from start to finish.

I enjoyed the first 30 minutes very much. I enjoyed the remainder of the film less so.
