The relatively simple direction and low profile cast allow the story to speak for itself, conveying Billy’s emotional rollercoaster to perfection. His character is ordinary, with an ordinary life and ordinary experiences. Just a man who made a stupid mistake. This makes Billy relatable; and this ability to identify to the detainee is the key to making prison stories successful on the screen such as this. There is a clear divide in the film, almost two acts - the before the verdict and the after the verdict or in other words the hopeful and the hopeless. It begs the viewer to question what is life without hope? The Midnight Express is strong, deep, raw and deeply inspiring. It is a must watch. That aside this movie is a reminder that in other countries the laws are much different and that the prison sentences are even worse. When Billy is caught trying to smuggle drugs into America he is giving a lengthy sentence. The best character in the movie is Jimmy played by Randy Quaid. I really wish he had more screen time. Is it racist towards Turkish people and its portrayal of the country is biased and charicaturized for dramatic purposes? Absolutely, yes. I think I lost a Turkish friendship over this but I can't change my mind, this film is an absolute masterpiece and not only "another prison break movie": this is THE prison break movie. Feb 20 Based on a true story. Very entertaining and harrowing take of being caught muling drugs in a foreign country and the consequences. Davis gives an incredible performance and the soundtrack is amazing. Turkish people claim it's a racist film, but it's not about Turkey, it's about a Turkish prison.
