Critics Consensus

Munich can't quite achieve its lofty goals, but this thrilling, politically even-handed look at the fallout from an intractable political conflict is still well worth watching.

Eric Bana gives a performance that deserves something more serious than an Oscar. It's a sublimely convincing portrayal of a man who is travelling far from who he is in order to defend who he is.

Munich's passion is clear, its intention good, the skill behind it immense; there is something brave about its decision to take politics into the multiplex.

Munich is more measured and classy than Spielberg's action-adventures.

Munich has a great cast and behind the scenes pedigree, but it feels like two films in one. One is an exciting action/heist film about a team of assassins. The other is an introspective film about retribution, family and land. The two don't fully mesh.

The film’s indulgent length and deliberate pacing – combined with a remote, uncharismatic lead – can make it a slog to get through despite some thrilling set pieces that remain some of the best-directed sequences in Spielberg’s career.

Violence begets violence in Steven Spielberg's bold and brooding thriller, beginning with the tragedy of the 1972 Munich Olympics.

I thought it dragged in places. I preferred Sword of Gideon more.

It is well directed and executed by Spielberg. Movie has an impartial take on the subject of violence and vengeance. It is very long but pacing is well managed through effective storytelling. Bana's performance is outstanding.

This movie, indebted as it is to Apocalypse Now and other '70s political thrillers, is mostly excellent. Spielberg does allow things to become overwrought, unfortunately. Avner's flashbacks to the Munich terrorist attack make no sense: he wasn't there, didn't see it, had no personal connection to the victims. So why is he seeing things we only recognise because we're watching a movie? Okay. That aside, Avner (Eric Bana) is a bland if handsome anti-hero. The team dynamic, with the other unofficials (let's call them) is richly entertaining, as are the various turns by the European actors. Mathieu Amalric superb as Louis, and Michael Lonsdale, the legend, stealing every scene as Louis's father. Geoffrey Rush, always excellent, as Ephraim. Daniel Craig (those blue eyes!) convincing as a South African. Really everybody is good, even the baby. The ending is a little unsatisfactory, alas.
