Aye E @RT43717499 10h This was much better than I expected. It was a view into what it does to a person's sense of self to deal with being linked to a notorious killer. To someone like me, who only superficially knows about Charles Manson history from growing up with it and watching many docs, it revealed a complicated web of different camps with different viewpoints that haven't seemed to evolve in 50+ years, and a kind of sub-culture surrounding Manson that lives on. And seeing how that is revealed through such a young person who had no sense of the context of the 60s & 70s, and ignorant of the history of Manson, with the understanding that she is genetically linked to him and what that means for herself and her father, proves an emotional and complicated journey. Approach this more like a study in human experiences rather than a doc about Manson, and there's plenty to appreciate in this doc. I think it's fascinating and little heartbreaking. She didn't even know who her paternal grandfather was the majority of her life, but plays the crying victim throughout the documentary. If anything, she inherited the narcissistic traits of Manson. Trust me, it is not worth the watch. See more Veronica T @RT49169985 2d 1000% not worth the time of watching. I thought it would be an interesting take such as the Netflix : My Father the BTK Killer. It was NOT! In the beginning she mentions how wonderful her upbringing is and how her father doesn’t want involvement in the documentary. She goes on to push him into uncomfortable conversations and interviews trying to bait him for a reaction. She then proceeds to talk about how everything is her father’s fault even though he never knew his father growing up. She seems to only want the opinions of those defending Charles rather than those seeking justice for the victims. There are even some interviews where she gets visibly upset with those that tell her that their first hand accounts with her grandfather were not positive. Ends with her changing her last name to Maddox (Charles legal name at birth) so that she can "pass down the legacy". Seems as though she would be a perfect candidate for "the family". Unfortunately I felt like this was a jump at a successful film career when the information of the 25% relation to someone awful turned famous…. turned trauma dump from her dad whose clearly in a mental turmoil. I wanted to see her journey after discovering she's related to one of America's most notorious killers. Instead, I got an endless parade of tears. Almost every scene is another crying session, and after a while it stopped feeling genuine and started feeling performative. After learning her dad's bio father was Charles Manson, she spirals. Suddenly every flaw in her father points back to Manson, and she becomes obsessed with proving how connected they are. She even pushes back against detectives and people who actually knew Manson because she's "done her research" The Rorschach test was especially disturbing, she seemed excited they interpreted one inkblot the same. What bothered me most was that she seemed eager to keep searching for more ways to connect herself to him, I found that incredibly unsettling and, frankly, disrespectful to the victims. I mean, she changes her last name to Maddox, Manson's original family name! Gross. Don't watch.
