Critics Consensus

Despite a valiant turn from Jessica Chastain as the spectral embodiment of a smothering parent, Other Mommy proves too silly for its intermittently effective jump scares to add up to a spooky whole.

Very cute — and Clark is an excellent shellshocked kid — but I’d have chosen more powerful thrills and bloody chaos over thematic niceties any day.

Other Mommy, though a mere 93 minutes, overstays its welcome.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing for a movie to leave you wanting more. Here, however, it seems to be a matter of misplaced priorities, as storytelling takes a backseat to cool imagery and wildly (one might even say nauseously) mobile camerawork.

According to the director himself, Other Mommy features about 50 jump scares, and none of them are remotely ingenious.

Nothing coheres into anything you really haven't seen before. It felt, to me, very flimsy. It just didn't add up to anything beyond kind of a paint by numbers, there is a terrifying entity horror movie.

It feels like the movie doesn't fully commit to anything, and it doesn't lean in any particular direction, and so we're left with something a little half baked.

Jumps you into the deep end immediately. Appreciated the goofiness of the male characters. A touching and relatable story told as a possession.
