Today, as Islam and headscarves become increasingly popular among German youth of the TikTok generation, it's helpful to remember how many people have been tortured and murdered in the name of (not only) this religion, simply because they wanted to live self-determined and true to themselves. The historical knowledge is pretty accurate, but the voice actors would constantly pronounce things, such as Tehran and Iran, wrong. The voice actors sounded monotone, and had distinct American accents. You’d think a movie about the Iranian revolution would have at least a few Iranian voice actors. It was embarrassing to watch. The animation is also exceptional in its ability to bring a graphic novel to life. Marjane (Gabriele Lopes (child)/Chiara Mastroianni (adult)) is impressionable and precocious as a child who turns into a perceptive and emboldened young woman. Marjane speaks with God, imagines herself a revolutionary, participates in illegal underground activities (having fun), and even is shamed when she uses the corrupt system of her culture to evade trouble. The animation style is largely normal with dramatic and cool transitions. The “Iranian Revolution” is the ultimate cautionary tale a la Animal Farm. The movie also finds the sweet spot of being equally effective for adults as for teens. “God forgive me,” says Grandmother (Danielle Darrieux) while stomping grapes in her bathtub. I can’t think of a better moment to summarize this story. I wish I had seen Persepolis sooner. Excellent movie.
