After all, we already know how it ends: 155 lives saved, a hero celebrated, and a happy landing. Yet, thanks to Tom Hanks’ understated brilliance and Clint Eastwood’s no-nonsense direction, the film is surprisingly engrossing. Hanks single-handedly carries the movie, delivering a performance that’s authentic, humble, and deeply human. He avoids the trap of playing Sully as a larger-than-life hero, instead portraying him as a man grappling with doubt, responsibility, and the weight of public expectation. Eastwood’s direction is lean and focused, avoiding the self-indulgence that could’ve derailed the film. There are no vanity shots, no unnecessary subplots - just a straightforward, respectful retelling of a modern miracle. The crash sequences are tense, and the investigation scenes are gripping, even though we know the outcome. The film’s real strength lies in its exploration of the aftermath: the NTSB hearings, the media scrutiny, and Sully’s internal struggle to reconcile his actions with the doubts of others. Is it groundbreaking cinema? See more Hughe J @Hughe Aug 8 Sully was released in theatres in 2016 and stars Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart and is directed by the iconic Clint Eastwood. The movie is based on the events surrounding Flight 1549 where Captain Sullenberger (Sully) was forced to land a jetliner in the Hudson river after it was struck by birds and lost it's engines. He and his co-pilot played by Aaron Eckhart are soon investigated by the NTSB while the press hailed them as heroes. Hanks was very good in his role, as was Eckhart, and the majority of the cast were also decent with the exception of the usually excellent Laura Linney. She played Sulley's wife and was a real distraction as her performance was not up to par. The NTSB investigation was interesting, the rescue scenes were well done, and while the movie dragged at points it was overall pretty entertaining. Easy movie to recommend. See more Read all reviews
