In this remake of the horror classic, a group of young travelers, including Erin, Andy and Morgan, comes across an isolated rural home while driving through Texas. Unfortunately for them, the decrepit house is the residence of a family of deranged backwoods killers, most notably a hulking masked brute known as Leatherface, who begins to hunt the stranded youths down. Will any of the friends survive the nightmarish ordeal?

Critics Consensus

An unnecessary remake that's more gory and less scary than the original.

An initially promising, but quickly disappointing retread of Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel's hugely influential horror classic.

'Inspired by a true story' presumably adds to the sordid thrills; maybe we should look forward to entertainments about Nazis torturing children.

You'll have to overcome resentment towards this unnecessary remake before you can be properly terrorised but, on its own terms, it plays well.

A handful of inspired moments aside, it lacks everything that made the original so horrifying.

[The 1974] movie is rightly deemed a classic. Yet the 2003 remake, which bears its name, is better.

Hands down my favorite installment in the series. Having seen the original, I think this movie does everything that the first couldn't. It has more of a story, more eventful, and frankly more scary. I particularly enjoyed the scene running through the hanging laundry. Although it has low ratings, this is one of my favorite horror movies. I definitely recommend to horror fans.

Entertaining. This remake adds little to the franchise in terms of novelty. It’s not as bad as the score suggests—it’s really a matter of expectations and comparisons to the first one. The cast is decent. The script and direction are okayish, but the tension drops halfway through. This version of the crazy family isn’t as scary or unhinged as past ones, though R. Lee Ermey is enjoyable as always. Popcorn movie for those empty late hours.
