jwcdood T @jwcdood Jul 22 THE CAPTIVE is an excellent story told in Atom Egoyan's entirely self serving way, attempting to stand out as "original" and "creative" with his ridiculously absurd time line skipping "to build tension" — when all it provides is audience killing frustration. And, the acting was good, but the story itself has holes in it and the contrived procedures of the police were sheer, "cheap shot" idiocy. I really wanted to like this flick, but Atom Egoyan managed to stupidly suck the life out of his own creation, not seeming to give a damn about his audience — but, instead, only about himself. It had all the makings of a fantastic movie. But they just let plot points and timelines just melt into one big,disappointing mess. They never explained the 2nd or 3rd level of this amazing ring with super encryption. Let alone who was in it and why they used this girl to promote it. Why he made her narrate her experiences and why it had such a value. Its almost like I watched 2 separate movies simultaneously. Why was he making her read Mozart? Where was the motive? Why were they following her? Shame. I was super excited the 1st half. Now I just want those 2 hours back.... See more Richard H @RT55496676 Mar 20 Once again I feel like most of the other raters here -- including the so-called experts -- either watched a different movie or are from a different planet. First, as to all the complaints about time-jumping, I had zero trouble following the shifts. Moreover, I thought it was a really effective way to maintain the tension. I found the ending clever, and then devastating ... I don't want to spoil it but it was anything but run-of-the mill thriller resolution. That plus the subject matter adds up to a powerful experience. If you find this movie slow and boring, it might just be because you are the slow one. See more Josh W @Wilspup75 Mar 18 This movie had such an opportunity to be good, but it jumps timelines without anyonbe looking different, so you spend half the time just trying to figure out which timeline you're in. Heck, a person is kidnapped mid-movie and by the end of the movie, I had forgotten they were even missing because they hadn't even thouched on them missing and that person kept showing up later on because we were set in an earlier time frame.
