Critics Consensus

There's no shortage of similarly themed crime dramas, but The Drop rises above the pack with a smartly written script and strong cast.

'The Drop' reminds us of what Gandolfini always did well: providing support, heft, and color, in the tradition of our finest character actors.

The film is just three degrees off being brilliant yet is always creepingly moving, and I loved its lived-in squalor.

As a vehicle for those two actors, The Drop is gangbusters.

The archetypes fade away to reveal broken men and women. Cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis' tasteful shadows consume all at some point.

"The Drop" does have a sly ending in mind and at play, a great scene really, but it doesn't match or make up for the tedious lead-up.

It's a well-made film that may be small in cinematic stature but big in terms of smart and precise storytelling.

Cleverly written and brilliantly directed. Stellar cast all excels in character. Steady pace fits in perfectly with the storytelling and ambiance. Captivating and entertaining

Another outstanding performance from Hardy. Makes watching this (at times) slightly pedestrian movie an eminently more enjoyable and rewarding experience.

This was the most slow paced movie I’ve ever seen in my life with horrible acting, and nothing exciting going on. For this to be called a suspense thriller is an insult to all thrillers. I found myself hoping that it would pick up the pace and it never did. The best part of this movie was the puppy. The rest of it was horrible. Save yourself the time from watching it.

This movie was horrible.. I can’t believe it has an 88 rating.. The acting was terrible. A lot of scenes seemed almost useless. This movie had lots of potential but scene after scene I felt myself getting more and more disappointed. Also for a movie like this, where is all the action scenes at? None of the characters were anything special either, nothing drew you to them. I can’t get over the fact this has an 88 and it triggers me a lot of you are calling this a good film. The puppy was the best part of the movie and that was about it.

A totally engrossing, brilliantly acted slow burner — rare to find a film these days that isn't dumbed down or predictable. The Drop is wholly believable, and every frame earns its place, but if your attention span doesn't stretch much beyond a soundbite, this probably isn't for you.
