There is much to like here, a sense of nuance and nonjudgmental emotional openness, yet Kasdan's teenage miniaturism never quite blooms. Go to Full Review Sara Stewart New York Post Oct 19, 2012

[An] inoffensive but bland ode to the talky high school movies of John Hughes and Cameron Crowe. Go to Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times Oct 18, 2012

No gratuitous raunchiness here and only a few tired caricatures in a genre usually jammed with them. Go to Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Aug 5, 2019
While the film is not worthy of abject dismissal, as Kasdan is at least trying to give us something that feels genuine, it's still predictable, still one note, and still features two main characters that aren't particularly thrilling to watch. The First Time isn't a groundbreaking film about teenage love, but it's cute and funny, and may spark good feelings of nostalgia for your high school years, even if you, like Aubrey, couldn't wait to get out of there. Go to Full Review James Plath Movie Metropolis Mar 12, 2013

I'm going to give it a seven because of the two stars. They're so darned likable that they make the film's shortcomings seem unimportant. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Ed R @JustcallmeER Sep 6, 2025 Two teens navigating the social awkwardness of adolescences. Not to mention, the movie was incredibly awkward and took multiple pauses to get through. See more BotHeroMaster T @BotHeroMaster Jan 1, 2025 good dynamic between leads, more family and side characters depth needed though See more Abriel G @RT74829973 Sep 13, 2024 This movie was OK at best, could have been a bit more creative, and it needed a better ending. BUT Dylan O'brien carried it. His acting is superb. I would watch again just bc of him. Such a talented guy, honestly. Roteiro e enredo teen. Vale apena assistir? Sim nas férias. Pois é meio sessão da tarde. Nota: 5 See more Todd C @ilwacohawk Nov 24, 2023 It is cheesy and predictable and at first I thought it was poorly acted. If you hate teen romantic movies, you will hate this. However, there was a deeper side to the movie and I got into it after a while. Nothing stands out as great, but the story of a couple of teenagers having sex for the fist time hit home a bit. I tried to not like it, but in the end, I kind of do. I don't recommend it, but there was something about it that made me care. There are sweet moments, but I will say that even in their immaturity, they were more mature than real juniors and seniors in HS. O'Brien and Robertson had good chemistry and are very likeable characters and humans. It is not a raunchy teen movie, which was refreshing. The friends were great. See more Read all reviews
