House also clearly wants to tell a story that celebrates New Zealand’s diversity, from the manner of speech to the characters’ choices.

[W]hile this is meant to be a bittersweet little story, the bitterness of the reality underneath it comes through no matter what sweetness may be on the surface.

Watching these 11-year-olds bickering and bonding while discussing life, death and Maori folklore is uplifting.

Shot on location in the Icelandic highlands outside Reykjavík, it’s a visually arresting film, too, with Kjartansdóttir creating space for the viewer to breathe, even as the characters struggle to do the same.

The Mountain ... has the spirit of backyard adventures writ large. ...[T]he film is a touching ode to friendship and seemingly random yet meaningful moments.

Watched this with my 10 year old so this our review. This movie was hardcore, bringing theme like death, cancer and loneliness to life. But it was also a magnificent story of hope, light and friendship. It was beautifully shot and some absolutely loved the Mauri language and culture coming in. The cloud scenes were amazing and the humour around cancer were both heartbreaking and at times funny. Overall incredible movie.....original, creative and thought provoking.
