What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ambitious to a fault, The Place Beyond the Pines finds writer/director Derek Cianfrance reaching for -- and often grasping -- thorny themes of family, fatherhood, and fate.

Gayle Sequeira Little White Lies Jul 29, 2023
The film points out how tough it can be to escape from cycles of violence, how misguided attempts to speed ahead only set someone on the road to ruin, and how the compulsion to ride like the wind is inextricable from the fear that you’re getting nowhere. Go to Full Review
Deborah Ross The Spectator Sep 4, 2018
Its themes are familiar - guilt; redemption; manliness; those fraternal sins - but Cianfrance's artistry and the actors' riveting performances hook you in, and may even bring depth. Go to Full Review
Jason Bailey Flavorwire Jun 21, 2016
Its narrative riskiness and emotional avidity don't always make for the smoothest viewing experience. But Cianfrance seems less interested in a tidy chronicle than in exploring some threads, in creating a feeling and seeing where it goes. Go to Full Review

Each and every performance on display is top-notch and even though it might not be the type of breezy, uplifting cinema most audiences pine for, it will be sure to leave you thinking minutes, hours and days later. Go to Full Review
Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Jul 23, 2025
5/5
"The Place Beyond the Pines" is nothing short of a modern opus all his own, brimming with more of that palpable emotion and wrought with ever-increasing tension, tragedy, triumph, and importance. Go to Full Review

An uneven, evocative drama that generated strong opinions a decade ago but then disappeared from the public consciousness is deserving of another look. Go to Full Review

Gareth V @geewah 14 hrs ago The Place Beyond the Pines is a flawed but fascinating piece of filmmaking. The first act is great, Cooper and Gosling both do strong work, and the final image is haunting, but it fades as it goes, and the last third can’t live up to the promise of the first. It kept me glued to the screen from the opening credits to the closing credits. See more Luis G @RT87897585 Aug 30, 2026 Amazing pacing for such a complex movie, who’s story spans over decades. It did feel like you were watching three different movies in one, which I get can be confusing for some…but overall this movie is beautifully shot and has one of the best police chases I have ever seen, just because of how much is at stake. Came for Ryan Gosling, stayed for Bradley Cooper. Even tho they only share on scene together, i think there is a great chemistry just in how Coopers character is plagued by his trauma. Awesome movie! See more Scott M @RT75128960 Aug 8, 2026 Three story movie. First story is about robbing banks, a story that was done better in "The Town". Second story is about a corrupt police department, which was done better in "Serpico". Third story is about a troubled teenager taken advantage of by a peer. I've seen TV shows do it better. Not a good film. See more Read all reviews
