Critics Consensus

As thought-provoking as it is visually compelling, The Witch delivers a deeply unsettling exercise in slow-building horror that suggests great things for debuting writer-director Robert Eggers.

Like any good horror film, The Witch is rife with opportunity for allegorical interpretation, and one of the most compelling narratives bubbling beneath surface is the origin story of America itself.

The stakes are real. The Devil is real. All roads do not lead up the mountain. Some lead to the heart of darkness, to the depths of a witch-haunted wood.

The film starts with wordy wittering and ends by trying to woo our shrieks -- from Arthur Miller to Dennis Wheatley in the shortest time possible between two blunt points.

My bestfriend and i watched this movie in 2025 on a whim due to likeing the acting style and look of anya taylor joy. We ended up loving this film and it had then created a multitude of horror/thriller movie obsession that is still running until this day. Anya taylor joy personified the true embodiment of witches with the conflict of family, loss of her brother and i believe it really made us understand her perspective on why she would become a witch.

Nice historical setting, but for me the movie does not really take off ground. The ending is specifically dissapointing.

The Witch is a dazzling piece of craft, and it announced Eggers as a major talent. The atmosphere is suffocating, the performances are excellent, and if you like your horror cold, historical and thick with dread, this is for you.

A truly great movie. The dialog is a perfect representation for the period it is set in. That amazes me. The superstitions and faith of the family destroyed them. A powerful lesson for the faith-filled of our time. This movie should be required viewing. Unfortunately, the ones who need to be affected by it, probably won't get it. Sad!
