Heroin addict Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) stumbles through bad ideas and sobriety attempts with his unreliable friends -- Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (Robert Carlyle), Spud (Ewen Bremner) and Tommy (Kevin McKidd). He also has an underage girlfriend, Diane (Kelly Macdonald), along for the ride. After cleaning up and moving from Edinburgh to London, Mark finds he can't escape the life he left behind when Begbie shows up at his front door on the lam, and a scheming Sick Boy follows.

A brutal, often times funny, other times terrifying portrayal of drug addiction in Edinburgh. Not for the faint of heart, but well worth viewing as a realistic and entertaining reminder of the horrors of drug use.

The addictions of each of the characters are nothing more than a kind of desperate cry in the face of the uniformity of a decade that, although its montage seems prosperous and pleasant, is nothing more than theatrical and hollow. [Full review in Spanish]

Unlike most generational touchstones about alienated young people, Trainspotting has its cake and eats it, too. It gets to be ruthlessly clever about the emptiness of workaday jobs and lifestyle creep while finding the rebellion far more self-destructive.

When considering the library of movies about drugs use and addiction, Trainspotting rises very near to the top (if not the top). This movie has all of the energy you would expect from Danny Boyle's early work. Every frame is exciting. His foot is on the gas the whole time. I saw this in 1996 when it came out and at the time I felt it to be revolutionary. I had not seen Shallow Grave during its theatrical run, but after seeing this I had to watch it. Ewan McGregor is astounding in this movie. Also, if you're a fan of big needle drops Boyle seemingly tapped into his inner Scorsese on this one. For any youngster thinking about dabbling in hard drugs, this and Requiem for a Dream should be a required double feature.

An amazing movie that teleports you to an unseen world. Spiked with deep commentary that keeps you thinking throughout. The main character was incredibly complex being both hard to like due to his actions, while keeping you still cheering for him in a way.
