Critics Consensus

Playing armchair psychologist to one of America's most infamous killers, Unabomber's fine acting can't compensate for an unconvincing thesis.

It offers little insight and duller still are its ’90s-set scenes, featuring a robotic Shailene Woodley as a CIA agent. Go to Full Review

All this biopic material about the corruption of Kaczynski’s high IQ is drab and lazy: it simply recycles A Beautiful Mind and assumes, job done. Go to Full Review

Sadly, Unabomber is not great. In fact, its greatest accomplishment is how it takes such great talent and such a potentially textured subject and creates such an unbelievably dull, misguided and lifeless result. Go to Full Review

As is customary with Netflix's dramatized true crime universe, Unabomber reduces all of Kaczynski's crimes, his psychology and behaviour, to "Here's the catalyst, and this is why he did it," lacking any nuance or thoughtfulness. Go to Full Review

Justin K @moofieluver999 1 day ago Worth a watch, I suppose (if you’re in the mood for this sort of film). Compelling story, but left quite a bit to be desired - and unnecessarily inserted robotic Woodley as the lead detective. All in all, the acting tanked the rating (Russell Crowe this doesn’t apply to you you are magical). See more Brian B @Brian328 1 day ago Sometimes I feel the critics on RT echo the crowd in the classic tale of the emperor’s new clothes. One person gives an opinion, and the rest follow suit believing it to be true. The critics are wrong here, and the negative reviews for Unabomber are uncalled for and entirely unjustified. Unabomber isn’t a documentary, it’s a drama, and dramas frequently use artistic license for many reasons. Multiple characters may be condensed into a single person, complicated plot elements may be bypassed due to time or financial constraints, and "reading between the lines" may be necessary to create a logical flowing drama. I’ve no doubt certain aspects of the film may be hypothetical, but as a drama, they’ve nailed it here. The acting’s top notch, the characters are believable, and the tense, psychological elements work exceedingly well. I really wasn’t expecting much from Unabomber (an adequate TV movie at most) but it genuinely surprised me. It’s tense, gripping, and a really really great watch. See more Katie H @RT91263695 1 day ago Even tho there wasn’t a lot it was still hella entertaining. See more Marc N @MarkRutte 1 day ago The writing and storytelling is so incredibly dull and basic that I am honestly suprised these actors even agreed to participate. They give you the conclusion of the movie within the first half hour (Who did it, why he did it and how did the FBI find him) and then spend another hour adding absolutely nothing of value. How they have managed to turn such an interesting true crime story, into such boring basic slop, is truly beyond me. But that's the Netflix touch I guess. See more Zachy Z @Zachyzach 2 days ago Terribly slow and dull. They also created Shailene Woodley’s character when there was an actual male detective who they erased. Totally unnecessary. And on top of that created a narrative that all the men were against her. This is beyond cheap story telling and honestly ruins it even more for me. Who is greenlighting this stuff? Who writes a Unabomber script and thinks they need to change the story and add a female hero? I’m so disgusted by the studios creative departments, this is childish. See more Horror fan 4 @Horrorfan4life 2 days ago Already knowing what expect seeing how I lived through most of this I was interested in his time before he became the Unabomber. That's what we get here. We go from his time at Harvard to present day being a loner living in a shack in Montana. It's hard to believe that this is the most expensive man hunt in the United States FBI history. He got away with this for so long I was surprised that they finally got him. I liked the performances and the character portrayal was good. Tim Treakle See more Read all reviews
