A heroic loner takes on a group of nuclear terrorists in this seagoing tale. Posing as a rock band, the terrorists get themselves hired for a party aboard the USS Missouri, a battleship en route to Pearl Harbor for decommissioning. They plan to steal the ship's nuclear arsenal but haven't reckoned on the intervention of the ship's chef, a decorated former Navy SEAL.

Critics Consensus

A well-directed action thriller that makes the most of its confined setting, Under Siege marks a high point for early '90s action -- and its star's spotty filmography.

Die Hard on a ship, this Steven Seagal starrer is a hard-charged, perfectly detonated actioner that should especially delight especially macho mainstreamers.

The tension and humor level tail off a bit toward the conclusion, but Steven Seagal and Chicago director Andy Davis clearly declare themselves as top-flight talent.

I walked into the screening in a cynical frame of mind, but then a funny thing happened. The movie started working for me.

This action-packed thriller set on board a U.S. Navy battleship was a big hit at both the box office and on home video.

There are more warheads in this movie than the missles being offloaded by these nefarious criminals.

Seagal may lack natural charisma, but a flamboyant performance from Jones, plus some sterling work from fellow baddies Gary Busey and Colm Meaney, more than compensate for his deficiencies.

Under Siege is great action movie out of the early 90s. Steven Segal as Rybak, a cook who thwarts domestic terrorist Tommy Lee Jones & Gary Busey from taking over naval carrier. Fun flick.

Greetings from Lithuania. "Under Siege" (1992) is an action film that I watched many times as a kid and liked it very much. Revisiting it in 2026 on newly released 4K UHD disk by Arrow Videos was a blast from a past. It looks and sound great on 4K. As of 2026, this is without a doubt the best film with Steven Siegal, and will remain so. It a slick action film directed by Andrew Davis, who a year later created his masterpiece "The Fugitive". "Under Siege" features a first hour so excited, so captivating and involving that in comparison the last 40 min or so felt a bit rushed and to much fast paced. Still, as an action thriller that is basically a "Die Hard" rip off it delivers. Sound is great here, there is plenty of action and a great performances by Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey who both delivered great and over the top performances. They are very entertaining to watch and are very memorable villains that elevated "Under Siege" to another level.

As time goes by this great action movie is firmly established as a 90s classic. However staid Segal is as an actor, he has presence and poise. It isn't Shakespeare but it is 100% entertainment with superb casting of an ensembles cast and holds tension throughout.
