On Valentine's Day, a double-decker bus explodes in a fiery blast, killing many and leaving charred remains, with evidence pointing to a deliberate act by two passengers, Fai and Ike -- a gay couple from troubled backgrounds living on the margins of society. As retired forensic expert Lung Sir investigates, he uncovers their tragic story of abuse, homophobia, and despair, culminating in their decision to end their lives in a suicidal protest against an unjust world, leaving behind a haunting message: "On a beautiful day, we end our unbeautiful lives."

With no real inner lives, these characters are blank canvases on which social turmoil is projected. Far from subverting ongoing discrimination, this misstep renders the whole film woefully obtuse. Go to Full Review

Yau handles the bombing with such indifference, turning a blind eye to their devastating actions without giving the characters proper depth. Go to Full Review

The long runtime allows Yau to jump back and forth between the two storylines, though the overlaps prove a little too convenient. The big issue is the development of the romance: Ike and Fai's relationship isn't believable. Go to Full Review
