Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 1 day ago Exhilarating dramatization of historical events. A large Zulu army wipes out a British one with a surprise attack, then 4000 warriors are sent to destroy a British hospital camp that scarcely has 150 troops in fighting condition. But the hospital commanders are warned, so they, what? They stand their ground! Don't elect to run away? You're kidding! Surely that's suicide, no? The defenders of Rorke's Drift, Welsh and English, and one Swiss mercenary, find themselves alone and outnumbered. Rather like High Noon, the only colonials that might have helped them, Boers and some other Africans, all run for the hills. Like the sheriff in the western, the Brits, some of whom are languishing in hospital beds, decide to keep calm and face what's coming. And what's coming is terrifying. A true tale of courage, ably presented for the big screen. Michael Caine's debut. Pity the rotten tomato who called this movie 'boering' (ha bl**dy ha!). This movie is anything but boring. See more Wayne K @WayneKelso Sep 7, 2026 A film probably most famous for giving Michael Caine his big break, Zulu is also an intense and claustrophobic war film that shows just how grinding and attritional constant attacks are, especially when in a vulnerable position. Lots of segments and even entire tracking shots are unnecessarily drawn out, but once the battle gets into its stride its as intense as anything you’re likely to see on screen. Burning roofs, buildings collapsing, enemies closing in on all sides, dwindling resources, exhaustion, dehydration. It doesn’t glamourise the conflict, it demonstrates how difficult it was to survive, and credit to the actors because it looks like it was a nightmare to film. The Zulu warriors are always presented as a tough, determined and strategic opponent rather that cannon fodder used to make the leads look good, and there’s a lot of quirky, interesting personalities among the British regiment. Still a great movie all these years later. See more Max M @Househuntermax Jul 29, 2026 Interesting story. But kind of a Boering movie (see what I did there?). See more Veit H @VeitHarlan Jun 27, 2026 Zulu is one of the greatest war films ever made. It is a masterful depiction of courage, discipline, and the indomitable White spirit of 150 British soldiers facing overwhelming odds at Rorke’s Drift. The film brilliantly captures that unique Western fighting spirit: brave, determined, and utterly unbreakable even when surrounded by thousands. Yet, watching it today leaves a bittersweet aftertaste. Zulu doesn't just celebrate heroism, it unknowingly serves as a haunting reminder of how far one of the greatest European empires in history has fallen. What was once a display of civilizational confidence and martial excellence now feels like a glimpse into a vanished world. An absolute must-see masterpiece. See more Lee P @Reeldetective Jun 26, 2026 Cy Endfield’s Zulu is a masterclass in war cinema, combining breathtaking cinematography with relentless battlefield tension. The sweeping South African landscapes and expertly staged battle sequences create an epic sense of scale, while Stanley Baker and Michael Caine deliver compelling performances. Historically, the film is more balanced than many of its era, portraying the Zulu warriors with dignity and courage, though it simplifies aspects of the Anglo-Zulu War and alters some events for dramatic effect. Despite these liberties, Zulu remains a gripping, respectful, and visually stunning retelling of Rorke’s Drift, standing as one of cinema’s greatest war films.
