Clever, chaotic TV writer Saoirse, glamorous, stressed-out mother of three Robyn, and dependable, inhibited carer Dara have been a tight-knit group since school. Now in their late 30s, but still as close as ever, these three friends are about to embark on the most thrilling adventure of their lives. When an email arrives, telling them about the death of the estranged fourth member of their childhood gang, a series of eerie events at her wake set them on a dark, dangerous and hilarious odyssey through Ireland and beyond as each tries to piece together the truth of the past. A show about friendship, memory and what happens when life doesn’t turn out quite like you'd expected.

Critics Consensus

Stretching its tone in different directions without ever snapping, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is another triumphantly funny and proudly Irish series from creator Lisa McGee.

Making the meal of a season even more savory is how McGee meets her own daunting challenge. Go to Full Review

From Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee comes an Irish tale powered by women and full of mirth and menace. It’s the kind of Netflix surprise we all need right now. Go to Full Review
Judy Berman TIME Magazine Feb 13
Even if you’re over whodunits, McGee’s cleverly meta spin on an overdone genre and her genius for comedy, dialogue, and character development make for an altogether good craic. Go to Full Review

If you've seen Derry Girls...you'll probably feel like you're watching a version of those friends with their unique, sing-song accent—the famous Derry accent —20 years later. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Fans of coherence should certainly look elsewhere. But what McGee gives us instead is exhilarating, foot-to-the-floor entertainment and (not in the Irish sense) the wildest of rides. Go to Full Review

The series keeps a lot of big splashy elements going all at once. and though it occasionally threatens to drop something, it keeps just enough control over the chaos. Go to Full Review

PBJ 5. @PBJ57 1h Brilliant writing, cinematography and actors. The creative story always drew us in and each story was rewarding. This was my favorite series of the year so far. See more Michael G. @SuiNimTao 1d A fun and intriguing mystery that unraveled over time. I liked the imperfect characters and look forward to a second season. See more Tony S @HotTom 1d The "friendship" just didn't click. Why (or how) these women became "inseparable" just doesn't make any sense. See more John J @Johnjoe85 1d The creator's previous series (Derry Girls) benefited from a hyper-active tone and pace, framing Northern Ireland as a whacky, eejit-filled madhouse because it was lampooning the grim disassociation of The Troubles and was told through the eyes of 4 completely hapless but likeable teenage characters. How to get to Heaven from Belfast, centres on an adult cast with transplanted 1-dimensional personalities, & the same hyper-active tone that feels repetitive and tired, especially given the show utilises a more adult cast & a more serious mystery storyline. Every character is a zippy-quippy-sweary-Marvel-esque-wink-wink nudge-nudge caricature, and the self-depreciating "oh aren't we all so mad?" humour now feels manufactured and flat. Hi, we're Ireland! Everyone's either a well-meaning idiot, an unlikeable idiot, evil, or a stereotype. That, and the story itself is a predictable slog that you've seen done 100 times better before. Love, Someone from Northern Ireland. See more Paul D @LVHothead 1d Fun. A lot like Deadloch with the oddball characters, but the plot was too confusing. Loved the hotel with all of the wild activities. See more David D @David2026 1d This is Lisa McGee’s journey from the whimsical and poignant Derry Girls to something more edgier…and it just doesn’t work. This is despite some great performances and occasional great writing. It reminds me of a similar journey by writer John McDonagh. We got the wonderful 2011 film The Guard, also whimsical but with a love for parochial Ireland. The move to the edgier Calvary was a film that greatly over egged its premise. Again, it had some great performances and occasional great writing, but ultimately like How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, it fails. See more Read all reviews
