Rob and Samira Fisher, a young couple and new parents, relocate to Rob's childhood home on Ashfield Place, a quaint cul-de-sac in the idyllic suburb of Hinkley Hills. Their quiet life quickly unravels when a mysterious man moves into the house across the street -- a creepy Victorian that has been abandoned for over twenty years. After observing suspicious behavior and learning about local lore, Samira starts suspecting that things are not quite what they seem. Home alone on maternity leave, she finds friendship with a ragtag group of quirky neighbors who join her in investigatory misadventures that bring them closer to the dark truths about their town. As she digs deeper, Samira begins to uncover long-buried secrets and deadly threats that shatter Hinkley Hills' reputation as "The Safest Town in America." What starts as amateur sleuthing quickly escalates and, as danger creeps closer to home, Samira must decide how far she's willing to go to protect her family and her community.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A television remake that lightens up the original film's hellish concept, The 'Burbs proves to be a good neighbor thanks primarily to Keke Palmer's crack comedic timing.

A pleasant surprise and an unlikely success. Go to Full Review

Palmer hits punchlines with ease, but her real talent is to add an absurd, transporting energy to a story’s necessities. It really pays off here. Go to Full Review

Overall, this was a really fun watch. Keke Palmer is, as always, a master of her craft, and really balanced the drama and comedy of it all with ease and expertise. Go to Full Review

The show wields [motive] duality throughout the cast to keep us on our toes insofar as its rug pulls are concerned. It’s a smart murder mystery revision with enough twists and turns to lead us astray so the final reveal feels as surprising as it can. Go to Full Review

The story isn’t incredibly complex, and the pacing certainly has some issues, but the cast as a whole is what makes this so endearing to watch. Go to Full Review

The 'Burbs is the right kind of modernized reboot. With all the right ingredients, the series captures the pettiness of an HOA and just how much bored curiosity gets done. Always comedic and sometimes creepy, the genre-blending series just works. Go to Full Review

Justin H @permapug 1h Very entertaining! Watched in two days. And no, my review is not from a bot, last time I checked, I was real. I can even pass the "I am not a robot" challenges! See more Mia C. @Bamwaescey 1h We just binged the show! I’m a big who-done-it/murder mystery show fan so I was very excited to watch this! I love the comedic tones of the show and how they touch on social issues. I particularly love the fact that each neighbor has their own issues they are dealing with but they don’t want to open up but it isn’t until that they are forced to that they do. Overall I cannot wait for a season two! See more eager 7 @Eager72 2h Even with Jack Whitehalls comical presence isn't enough to save it for me I enjoyed the original a true classic with a remake that's second class See more Daisy @Daisy76 3h So much fun! Love the comedy sprinkled into murder mystery!!!!! Finally a show that is just so much fun to watch for mystery buffs who like it not to just be so serious the whole time which is so annoying with all those CSI shows being all the same. I loved the 80’s movie so I thought I’d give it a try and they just did a fantastic job. A Must See!!! I’ll be so upset if they don’t bust out a season 2. See more Darrin S. @TheEditor444 3h First they start it off by making it about race, foul language, who’s sleeping with who, etc. I’ve never rated anything on rotten tomatoes. This was so bad I was compelled too. Who are the writers? Who’s telling anyone in Hollywood, NBC, etc “this is good content.” Who’s running the show deciding on scripts like this? It’s as if they want to erase any good content. The original movie is hilarious… this, I couldn’t even get through the first half hour. See more Alexander C. @AlexCots 4h Here’s the sharper English version: The ’Burbs turns a fun premise into an exercise in frustration. The plot only moves forward because the characters make absurd decisions and ignore clues that are literally right in front of them. The mystery doesn’t build tension — it builds irritation. Lacking coherence and sharp satire, this adaptation completely misses the wit and smart paranoia that made the original memorable. See more Read all reviews
