Blu B @RT43513976 Jan 28 All Time Classic. It's cut from the same cloth as The Last Picture Show and would'nt suprise me if it had an influence on it. Where that felt like it goes in circles for me, this just builds and builds the entire time to a devastating conclusion for everyone involved. It really deals with themes of the changing of the old guard, and not being dealt a fair hand. The characters are fasinating. Douglas & Newman are phenominal here. Newman shows why he became an icon of his generation with a performance that reminds me of the like of Brando. The dialouge is realy good as well. The music is good but I wish it was maybe a bit more varied and catchy. Other than that everything is flawless honestly. You hope things work out for these characters and along the way while we wait we bond with them, hate them, laugh with them, and fear for them. You can't look away. It's a drama and Modern setting Western (Neo) masterfully weaved together. We stay laser focused on the core four the entire way. Eve See more Mike J @Writer69 01/21/2025 Since this film is quite old, its impact is somewhat less shocking. Paul Newman plays a smoking, drinking bad guy who makes an impression as a womanizing cad. The real star of the movie is Brandon De Wilde as his nephew Lonnie. Brandon was an excellent actor who unfortunately died very early in his career. The movie is a must see just for Brandon. Ends poetically and the drama in between seems to always teeter on the brink of personal self destruction before boiling over at one uneasy point. Watched on DVD. He never is able to start a picture well, dwelling on long shots of empty roads, rivers, or landscape. In the case, however, this approach works as the film explores a character without no redeeming graces. Hud violates every principle of common behavior, lying, cheating, stealing, raping and draft dodging (the final straw to Lonnie's break with him). Paul Newman's performance is perfect, making this odious person attractive. He drives off everyone. James Wong Howe's cinematography is not only excellent, it is glorious, winning him an well-deserved Oscar. I would go so far as to say that this is Ritt's only great film.
