You can say you don’t like Lumet’s cinematic choices; you just can’t say he didn’t make any cinematic choices. They abound - and at times astound - in this adaptation. Go to Full Review Ed Potton The Times (UK) Mar 24, 2020

The result is inevitably a bit stagey, especially Hepburn's more histrionic moments. Yet the psychological insight is acute, the tone searingly dark. Go to Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times May 20, 2003

For what they have set out to do, Mr. Lumet and the producer, Ely Landau, have given us a fine, fair picture of a tough and maybe tedious O'Neill play. Go to Full Review Josh Larsen LarsenOnFilm Aug 1, 2024

...does little to disguise the fact that it’s based on the Eugene O’Neill play. Go to Full Review Dwight MacDonald Esquire Magazine Aug 1, 2019
Sidney Lumet has given us a superb cinematic translation of the only American play to which the much-abused adjective "great" can seriously be applied. Go to Full Review Wesley Lovell Cinema Sight Aug 15, 2011

An adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's legendary play results in a stage-bound production lifted by grand performances, including the delightful Katharine Hepburn. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Jacob B @RT48293763 Sep 8, 2025 Eugene O'Neill’s plays don’t spring to mind as material that demand cinematic adaptation. However, the director did somehow manage to make this, arguably his best play, come as close as possible to being cinematic (I wish Ingmar Bergman could’ve adapted this; it’s definitely more his style of material) . Even if the film feels a little stagnant and stage bound, the performances of Sir Ralph Richardson and Katherine Hepburn (eschewing her famous mannered acting style finally) and Jason Robards are master classes in acting. W @Witt2k9 Jun 12, 2023 It's a filmed play, no new dimentions explored except the stage play itself. But, the performances of the cast are outstanding. See more steve d @RT35616104 Jul 19, 2020 Way too dark and melodramatic for me. See more andy f @RT81936104 Nov 10, 2017 Another masterpiece from Sidney Lumet. A family with addictions descend into dark territory as a day progresses into night. Utterly mesmerising, only Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf possibly beats this for the dark humour and drink sodden atmosphere. Four world renowned actors at the very top of their game.
