Charles Bronson delivers a masterclass in stoic precision as Arthur Bishop, a hitman whose clinical approach to murder feels chillingly authentic compared to the high-octane spectacle of modern cinema. The near-silent, sixteen-minute opening sequence is a bold piece of filmmaking that highlights the movie's patient, cerebral tension. By the time Jan-Michael Vincent enters the fray as the arrogant protégé, the film has evolved into a fascinating, cynical character study that proves its enduring grit. See more Joe C @RT60966355 Apr 1 One of my favorite movies. CB plays it lowkey, he is the expert with a lifetime of small skills appropriate to his profession that he passes on to JMV. He isn't full of himself, plays it down, he even has ailments that show the stress. JMV is pushy and adolescent but shows a grudging admiration for his teacher. My one complaint is that their final adventure is just an over-long action sequence that doesn't highlight the characters or their relationship that the movie spent so much time building up. But possibly because, even though I'm too young to have seen his movies when he was alive, I've become quite the die-hard Charles Bronson fan, and have watched every one of his movies. See more Jay W @RT52162311 11/21/2024 "The Mechanic" is a unique situation. In many ways it is decades ahead of its time. In other ways, it is the most 70's movie I've ever seen. The movie focuses on Arthur Bishop, played by Charles Bronson. He is a professional assassin, who orchestrates his hits to look like accidents. The opening scene reminds me a lot of a movie that could come out today. Watch this and then "The Killer" from 2023 and you can see a lot of similarities. It is in... forgive the pun, the execution that things differ. The movie begins with all the credits for the film. The music is going crazy with the bongos. Everyone's hair and fashion is very 70's, ton of mustaches, sideburns and Beatles haircuts. Also, the editing is all over the place. Bad ADR and smash cuts all around. The James Bond like action and very meandering pace is also reminiscent of that era of filmmaking. In short, the movie has a good compelling intro and an awesome ending. The good stuff in the middle is far too few and far between. But, if you're a fan of Charles Bronson and can forgive some awkward cinematography, this movie is a fine time.
