CodyZamboni Z @CodyZamboni Feb 8, 2025 Movie is poorly written, With pretentious dialogue that has no connection to how real people talk, Very annoying, Horrid acting by Candice Bergen, Only saving grace is Jacqueline Bisset. She remains sympathetic, despite weird character arcs, like suddenly dating 20 year old men, It was nice seeing a young Meg Ryan, Movie is loaded with celebrity and literary cameos. Sadly, George Cukor's last. and one of his less worthy films. Bisset is Liz Hamilton who writes for critics while Bergen is Mary Noel Blake who does it for the money Both of them leave college in 1959 to pursue their dreams As time goes on each of them has successes yet they also develop personal struggles in the process Liz moves from romance to romance unable to solidify a healthy relationship, Mary ends up being married and having a child but wants to write a novel like her It's everything in between that would either build their friendship or ultimately break it Mary and Liz are happy but in truth they want each other's lives Is being rich harder or easier than being famous? Can two people be truly satisfied with how their lives go as planned? This reminded me so much of 'Beaches' with two women attempting to be in each other's lives yet slowly over time they grow apart It's true everyone wants different things to be happy but at the same time not clash with one another Bisset and Bergen are a dime a dozen together, even a young Meg Ryan shows up as Mary's daughter The movie is far too long for its own good But the friendship of Liz and Molly is what keeps this together, they're human beings first looking at all their problems before it's too late I found Liz to be a more interesting character since she's struggling so much to find that sense of pure happiness without constantly losing it This will be trying for some but these two leading ladies make the movie See more May 15, 2018 The shabby text undermines the valiant efforts of the hard-working costars and their stylish director to revive the pleasures of a vintage Hollywood women's picture. It is about Liz Hamilton and Merry Noel who become friends as college roommates and their friendship endures over the years. Jacqueline Bisset and Candice Bergen give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. George Cukor did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the drama. See more Jan 19, 2016 The last movie of prolific director, George Cukor, is probably his worst. The acting is terrible and the story is incredibly boring. (First and only viewing - 1/19/2016) See more Dec 7, 2015 Wow! This Was B-A-D ! Incredibly embarrassing final film for director George Cukor. His great career wheezes to a stiflingly bad conclusion in "Rich and Famous." I am guessing it is supposed to be an R-rated version of the popular "women's pictures" from times previous. But, instead, it lurches so uncomfortably with terrible dialogue that no one would EVER speak. The performances are rudimentary, at best, with Bergen's terrible come-and-go attempt at a southern accent the most egregious. I only watched it on TCM because: 1.) There was nothing else on, and 2.) To see how bad this trainwreck would be. Conclusion: Pretty bad! ** (2 Out of 10 Stars) See more Read all reviews
