A magical board game unleashes a world of adventure on siblings Peter and Judy Shepherd. While exploring an old mansion, the youngsters find a curious, jungle-themed game called Jumanji in the attic. When they start playing, they free Alan Parrish, who's been stuck in the game's inner world for decades. If they win Jumanji, the kids can free Alan for good, but that means braving giant bugs, ill-mannered monkeys and even stampeding rhinos!

Critics Consensus

A feast for the eyes with a somewhat malnourished plot, Jumanji is an underachieving adventure that still offers a decent amount of fun for the whole family.

Well, the special effects are impressive but what wins you here is a theme-park ride, twisting and turning, making you laugh one minutes and duck the next.

This is an entertainment in the broad Hollywood tradition of Capra and Spielberg, with a boisterous touch of Peter Pan in that the stern father figure and the scary villain are both played by the same actor.

The technology both overwhelms the human cast and stalls the narrative drive. Even Williams's manic energy finally flags.

A delightful family adventure that isn't afraid to get a little dark (or scary!) for its child audience.

Time has softened it, especially given the passing of star Robin Williams, and it's an enjoyable watch.

Fairly entertaining throughout, "Jumanji" benefits from the cool concept and the really good effects bringing it to life as well as certain amusing scenes. Also, the time reset is a fittingly strong choice for the end, though the film is uninterested in establishing any sort of lore that would make this universe feel more solid. Indeed, the storytelling is mostly rather simplistic and doesn't take many risks; at the same time, the film is missing a truly charismatic performance to carry it all.

I remember watching this as a kid, and it TERRIFIED me. Robin Williams is great in this, but that’s about it. Do not watch this if you want to sleep peacefully afterward. This movie will TERRIFY you for life. 😂

Chaos comes crashing through the front door in Jumanji, a gleefully inventive adventure that turns a simple board game into a suburban survival nightmare. Robin Williams is the film’s beating heart, bringing manic energy, warmth and surprising emotional depth to a man haunted by decades trapped inside the game, while Bonnie Hunt provides a grounded counterweight. The creature effects have aged, but their tactile oddness adds to the movie’s old-fashioned charm, and the mix of danger, comedy and genuine feeling keeps the spectacle engaging. Some repetition in the escalating disasters and a rather functional villain blunt the impact, but they’re minor blemishes on an imaginative family film that respects both kids and adults. Jumanji remains a rollicking reminder that family entertainment can be funny, scary and wonderfully weird.
