Robert P @Superbad Oct 7, 2026 The Road Home is a 4.5 star Movie! See more Navid S @navidshah94 Jul 3, 2026 What a beautiful, heartbreaking gem. Zhang Yimou's The Road Home is a quiet masterpiece about love, devotion, and the simple power of memory. The story is simple, but it carries profound emotional weight. The cinematography is breathtaking; golden fields, snow-covered paths, and that unforgettable red cloth; and the performances are achingly sincere. A sad, fascinating, and deeply human story. One of the most moving Chinese films I've ever seen. Highly recommended. See more Kevin L @Lakeman Apr 5, 2026 It's a nice film. I wish there was more about why they were in love, other than just looking at each other a lot, he was a good teacher, & she liked to cook for him. Seems kinda thin. Not a lot to base a LTR on. Bit melodramatic as well; plus the cheesy strings at times in the score. Also, what were the 'political problems' he had? Why were they kept apart for two years? Some cultural revolution nonsense? But overall a fine movie. Ziyi & Zhao give the best performances as young & old Zhao Di. 3.3 stars See more Matthew D @OceanSage Feb 1, 2026 A timeless classic about the power of love preserving across the ages. Director Zhang Yimou’s Chinese romance drama The Road Home (1999) is truly a kind, patient, and considerate story of love. Yimou’s direction is breathtaking with these sweeping forests, vast roads, and blistering winds that make for a harrowing backdrop to his cute love story. I loved all of the close-up shots of Zhang Ziyi’s determined face to see the man she loves. Composer San Bao’s romance theme is enchanting and memorable. The Road Home feels like a fairy tale with writer Shi Bao’s romantic narrative of a shy country girl who falls in love with a young schoolteacher. Zhang Ziyi is gorgeous, heartbreaking, and heartwarming as the young girl Zhao Di. Seeing her running, cooking, waiting, and listening for the young teacher is very touching. All the close-up shots of her eyes just staring are spellbinding. My heart warmed every time she smiled. See more Georgan G @RT98616417 Jul 31, 2023 One of the ultimate love stories. Very little dialogue as the looks between the 2 young people said it all. The thankfulness of the teacher's students at his death was very touching. See more Peter W @RT12077588 Apr 29, 2023 Overall, if you're seeking a romantic journey of young love, The Road Home is one for you. Even when the outcomes are apparent, the journey of the main leads is filled with wonder and unpredictability. The highly creative and clever visuals successfully bring a setting and atmosphere to life that is highly captivating even when very little is occurring with the main story. Ultimately, it's impossible not to walk away from this film without feeling either inspired or uplifted. It truly is beautiful. See more Read all reviews
