Joe Moore (Gene Hackman) has a job he loves. He's a thief. His job goes sour when he gets caught on security camera tape. His fence, Bergman (Danny DeVito) reneges on the money he's owed, and his wife (Rebecca Pidgeon) may be betraying him with the fence's young lieutenant (Sam Rockwell). Moore and his partner, Bobby Blane (Delroy Lindo) and their utility man, Pinky Pincus (Ricky Jay) find themselves broke, betrayed, and blackmailed. Moore is forced to commit his crew to do one last big job.

We watch a movie like 'Heist' for the virtuosity of the execution, for the wit with which Mamet writes his way through the conventions, and the pleasure his actors take in chewing on his dialogue, in all of its repetition, shop talk, and artful profanity. With more twists than a Chubby Checker concert, it felt like the writers were trying too hard to surprise the audience. A few of the actors were a bit patchy and the script needed work. Mamet's on the top of his game with the dialogue - plenty of quotes you'll remember, like: "I wouldn't worry about her, she could talk her way out of a sunburn" Crazy and implausible plot twists, but if you can dispense with disbelief, this film's thrilling ride and strong performances and dialogue make it well worth watching See more Read all reviews
