Critics Consensus

A voodoo horror flick without the mojo, Venom is chock full of gory impalings of interchangeable teenage girls and hunky guys by an unstoppable zombie whose unimaginative rampage quickly lulls us to sleep.

This straight-up slasher flick probably should have gone straight to video for the cheesy-looking, computer-generated snakes alone. Go to Full Review Time Out Jun 24, 2006
The slasher clichés on reshuffle are old enough to predate the births of most of the flick's nubile victims-to-be, including tight-T-shirt wearer Agnes Bruckner. Go to Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Mar 19, 2006

The objective critiques were not unwarranted; the script has shortcomings, and the characters are underdeveloped. The silver lining, however, is Venom is a well-directed stab of teen horror punctuated with pushy violence and the highest urgency. Go to Full Review Mark H. Harris Black Horror Movies Jan 6, 2020

Robert P @Superbad Oct 8, 2026 Venom is a *1* star Movie! See more B P @Bradster69 Sep 12, 2026 Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Jay L @Jay.Livin Aug 29, 2026 Decent 2000’s horror film. Eden was kind of insufferable, she had a suspicion that ray was still alive but doubted her friend when she explained her grandmothers past and basically summed it up as religious psychosis. The writing was also just bad in general because during everything that happened we only see the cops in the beginning of the movie. Where were they for the rest of the movie? If one cop goes missing we all know that whole department would be searching for them. I also wish there was more gore but I know the main focus of the storyline is the voodoo so I understand they didn’t show too much. See more Samantha L @Samantha.Henry.Diva Jul 31, 2026 Cheesy and missed all the appeal of voodoo for a horror film See more Lúcio Leonardo P @LucioTomas Nov 24, 2025 This entertainment had some potential for the genre, but it got lost in clichés and the "freedom" that a film about a curse can bring to the story and its logic. For those who like that sort of thing, it's worth checking out; however, for those who appreciate a good film, it's pure venom! See more Jason W @Thejasonwatts Aug 10, 2025 A tow truck driver saves a voodoo lady prior to getting bit by snakes and drowning. The problem is he comes back as a snake version of a Jason Voorhees wannabe and kills the teens of the town for some reason, adding a voodoo element, just because. I thought this was a 90s flick with the bad acting and lackluster cgi, but somehow this was made in the early 2000s. Some decent scenes but it's a confusing film with token annoying teen victims being murdered viciously by a snake man tow trucker. See more Read all reviews
