The possibility of Oscar gold holds the cast and crew of an independent film in its grip after the performance of its virtually unknown, veteran star (Catherine O'Hara) generates awards buzz. Though the movie in question, "Home for Purim," is impossibly awful, the rumors of future nominations snowball and attract the attention of a distributor who wants to make a few "minor" changes.

Critics Consensus

As the object of satire gets bigger the jokes become thinner, and Christopher Guest isn't as droll or insightful here than when he was lampooning smaller subjects.

Look, while For Your Consideration may not be Guest's best film, as Guest not at his best is better than most, you'd be a fool to miss this. Go to Full Review Amy Nicholson I.E. Weekly May 15, 2009

The point is that Hollywood types are--gasp!--shallow. If that news shocks anyone, check your pulse, because you may have been in a coma for 80 years. Go to Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard Feb 9, 2007

O'Hara delivers a tour de force performance, channeling all the hopefulness, rage, and despair that will doubtless strike a chord with aging, frequently unemployed and quickly forgotten thespians all across Los Angeles. Go to Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn May 16, 2023

It was a bit too disjointed for me to enjoy even with the great Catherine O'Hara. Some other characters were just too bonkers for me. I could have used a few more grounded moments in this story. Go to Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn May 16, 2023

There are still some hard belly laughs in this film despite it's inconsistent editing and some long-winded scenes. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Aye E @RT43717499 Feb 20, 2026 I can't believe I have just watched this movie for the first time. This had me laughing harder than I have in a long time. Comedy lately is mostly pleasant and chuckle worthy, but this has some real laughs. There are also soooo many familiar faces. Several that only became familiar in different shows and movies later on, so it's a treat to spot them. Everyone is fantastic. It definitely doesn't go out with a punch. I think one moment of the cast member who did get nominated might've been a good way to close. But Catherine O'Hara was still perfection. I also can't believe the low ratings!! Just the premise of the movie within this movie was gold, and them in character doing their southern accents. C'mon! See more Jason H @RT50328122 Feb 18, 2026 This just might be Catherine O'Hara's best movie performance. See more Alec B @Alec97 Feb 9, 2026 This gets so dark and bleak. No wonder that everyone hates it. Catherine O'Hara's performance is just incredible here, without vanity and willing to go there. See more Jonathan O @RT41230270 Feb 7, 2026 Not feeling mockumentary from previous Guest's mockumentary films however this could be perfect for oscar buzz just like every movies and films that should be nominated for a oscar this is what it feels like for not getting consideration for a oscar. See more Deb L. @lyra235 Feb 1, 2026 I haven’t viewed this movie for a couple years. But I have seen it several times, and I think it’s fantastic. I mean, it’s perfect viewing now with the Oscar nominations recently. The whole cast is wonderfully funny. Catherine plays a pseudo serious actress who hears through the grapevine she is to be nominated Well, she really goes through the wringer waiting and wondering. 🎬 See more BJ M @HotMovieStar May 6, 2025 This one is a dud. I really regret watching it because I feel I can never get that time back to do something useful. I laughed a couple times - which is why I rated it this highly. It is bad for the soul to watch something this dreadful. See more Read all reviews
