When 9 (Elijah Wood) springs to life, it finds itself in a post-apocalyptic world where humans no longer exist, and the only signs of life are sentient rag dolls like itself and the machines that hunt them. Though it is the youngest of the group, 9 convinces comrades that the only way to survive against the machines is to stop hiding, go on the offensive, and find out why the machines want to destroy them. As 9 and the group learn, civilization hinges on their success or failure.

Critics Consensus

Although its story is perhaps too familiar and less complex than some might wish, 9 is visually spectacular, and director Shane Acker's attention to detail succeeds in drawing viewers into the film's universe.

9 is a challenge to remember our roots... to not get caught in our beliefs or our politics or - most especially - become chained to the powers of our intellect alone.

The new version stays so true to the original you could describe it as a feature-length short-which is not the most staggering accomplishment.

Gorgeously animated, beautifully executed and incredibly imaginative, Shane Acker's 9 manages to nonetheless feel a little bit like something you've seen before.

With plenty of better animated films on offer this year, it is probably best to save time and money, and watch the short instead.

By telling a story that could not be filmed in live-action, Acker makes animation the wonderfully unpredictable and visionary art form it should be. Too bad he doesn’t back up his glorious animation with an equally interesting story.

If the story lacks in expected profoundness, the generally impressive character designs more than make up for it.

I finally got to watch this after waiting, like what over a decade? It was beautiful. I also watched the short it was made from afterwards. It's so wonderful to see a movie based off source material be so true to the original vision and give the creator creative license to fully bring their art to a big screen. It's honestly a shame I never saw it before today.

Beautiful, I love this film. It leaves beautiful messages, why should it be criticized so badly? For me, this film is a masterpiece.
