Inspired by the true story of ‘Jugend Rettet’, 23 000 Lives tells the story of a group of young people who no longer want to stand by and watch as countless refugees die in the Mediterranean on their way to Europe. With no experience in sea rescue, they launch a crowdfunding campaign, buy an old fishing vessel, and go on to save the lives of more than 23,000 people. But what begins as a shared mission full of hope and determination soon puts their understanding of law and justice to a severe test.

The real life elements are compelling enough to carry the film. What a difference it would make if Netflix committed to human narrated audio description every time, instead of continuing the synthetic race to the bottom. Go to Full Review

If nothing else, you'll be impressed throughout by the efforts put in by the real volunteers. Go to Full Review

Earnest uplift balanced with some of the more difficult realities of refugee rescues makes 23,000 Lives a worthy watch. Go to Full Review

A collision of humanitarian ideals and harsh realities, 23 000 Lives tells a compelling story of how a simple, noble mission of "saving lives" becomes a much more complex, uncomfortable voyage. Go to Full Review

Still, if we’re going to get one-sided message movies about refugees and immigration, 23,000 Lives is the kind I’d prefer we got. Go to Full Review

Marco L @decatur555 7h 23,000 Lives is a moving true story about a group of young volunteers who refuse to stand by while refugees die crossing the Mediterranean. With no maritime rescue experience and limited resources, they raise money, obtain an old ship and discover that determination alone cannot prepare them for what awaits at sea. The film works best when it moves from early optimism to the exhaustion, fear and helplessness of real rescue missions. Louis Hofmann gives the story an idealistic but imperfect center, and the volunteers are never treated as flawless heroes. Some of the politics are simplified and the message can be very direct, but the emotional impact remains strong. A hopeful, painful and worthwhile reminder that behind every number are individual lives that could have been lost. However, because i don't know enough about the real life events, and it seemed like this movie tried to be a little bit manipulative, explained alot, rather than let the impact of its story shine through, and was a bit bias towards one way of thinking, without showing the rather complicated issues of its subject matter in a broader way, i am giving it this score. In sum, it is decently well done and engaging, but a bit manipulative, too explanatory and does not cover nuances in an unbiased way. I have seen better; but i have also seen worse. Louis Hofmann, Katharina Stark, Frederick Lau, Mala Emde, Maria-Victoria Dragus, and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job in this movie. This true story about the Jugend Rettet rescue organization was dramatic, inspirational, and incredible. It's about ordinary people willing to help rescue refugees while others are trying to stop them. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's a definite must see.
