Brazil's first horror film, "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul," features the first appearance of Coffin Joe (José Mojica Marins) of the Coffin Joe Trilogy. A wicked undertaker whose wife cannot bear children, Joe conspires to impregnate Terezinha (Magda Mei) in her stead. When several people in the small town are found murdered, Dr. Rodolfo suspects Joe's involvement. A gypsy warns Joe of tragedy, but he dismisses her as a fraud -- only to discover that revenge may live beyond the grave.

Right away, this B&W Portugese classic puts the watcher in a vibe of fear, "Spoogolie style". Classical horror at its finest.

This is low-budget madness at its finest. Coffin Joe chews up the cardboard scenery as the meanest undertaker in town. The gore is effective, the film short enough and just coherent enough to keep me watching. I can't wait to see part two.

Brazilian undertaker "Coffin Joe" eats meat on Friday, terrorizes the townspeople, and plots to steal his best friend's fiancee; a gypsy witch is the only person in town who dares to defy him. Like Alex in CLOCKWORK ORANGE, but smarter, Coffin Joe is a terrifying villain because he freely chooses evil---and because he gets such pure pleasure out of other people's suffering.

Synopsis
