The fifth installment of the popular franchise focuses on Alice (Lisa Wilcox), a survivor of the fourth, who believes Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) has been eliminated for good. She optimistically hopes to start a life with fellow survivor Dan (Danny Hassel). The nightmares begin soon enough, though, and Alice learns she is pregnant. When her friends start dying, Alice suspects that Freddy is using the fetus within her as a weapon. Can she fight the demon while protecting her unborn child?

Critics Consensus

A Nightmare on Elm Street feels exhausted by this cheesy fifth entry, bogged down by a convoluted mythology while showing none of the chilling technique that kicked off the franchise.

The Dream Child has good ideas, and is entertaining despite its flaws. Partly a victim of a rushed production, and partly of extensive MPAA cuts, the final product is a slapdash jumble of what could have been a far more compelling entry in the franchise. Go to Full Review

Shadow R @GeminiShadowRealm 1 day ago The Dream Child takes the franchise down a bizarre and overly convoluted path. Picking up after graduation, the film brings back survivors Alice and Dan as a couple, only to kick off with a wildly eccentric premise involving a pregnant woman and Freddy Krueger resurrecting himself through an unborn baby. The supporting cast of friends feels increasingly strange, and Dan's grim fate, which Alice bizarrely glimpses beforehand derails any real emotional stakes early on. While the plot attempts a fresh spin by having Freddy try to live through the dreams of Alice's unborn child (whom she sees as an older boy named Jacob in her visions), the execution is mostly messy and far less frightening than previous films. See more Teddy B @RT90521672 Oct 9, 2026 I honestly don't mind Campy Freddy at all, because Englund plays him with such charisma and good humour that he's impossible to really hate. There is enough of a distance between Campy and Creepy Freddy that Englund can switch from one to the other without it feeling like two entirely different characters. However, even Englund can't save this movie in the long-run. While it is decently inventive and offers some inspired nightmare scenarios, 'Dream Child' feels more like a made-for-TV movie with its jarring and extensive cuts, muddled story, B-grade acting and a surprisingly dour and depressing atmosphere. This feels like a small piece of something much grander, much more sustained, but it doesn't seem interested in exploring any of that. The majority of the effects are quite impressive and visually striking, however, and as I said Englund is very entertaining and commands every scene he's in, making this not a TOTALLY worthless watch...I guess... See more Benjamin W @Code70 Oct 6, 2026 To me, this is where the franchise really railed off the course. I wasn’t a fan of the second, and while I enjoyed the fourth film slightly more, I don’t think that one works either, overall. But this one feels distinctly like that point in the franchise where it just lost the premise, or at least what made it special. The Dream Child is just ridiculous. The effects look worse, the story lackluster, it’s not scary, the comedy is over-the-top, and it just feels like we’re just dragging this thing on, so much longer than it needed to be. Diminishing returns is severe at this point, and no amount of charm from Robert Englund can save it. Skip this one. Even if you’re a fan of the franchise, unless you’re a completionist like me, there’s no reason to seek it out. It sucks. See more Julian C @juliancooper_12 Sep 30, 2026 This sequel is not scary, has horrible kills, and is poorly executed.
