Julie B @RT75296191 Jul 16 Like so many millions of others across 3 generations, this book was truly formative for 6th-grader me. Movies for screens big & small have tried and failed. I thought DuVernay/Winfrey might be the Peter Jackson that we needed. Nope. Instead of being a story about a few talented, lovely oddball kids learning that being different is better than okay - it's everything, we're taken through an empty shell of one special effects vacuum chamber after another. And NONE of them contributed to the story in any way. The movie wastes at least 20 minutes (and untold millions) on pointless CGI, then sacrifices the most important part of the whole story: Aunt Beast. She did what The Ladies hadn't been able to do: She helps Meg to finally understand what's important and how special she is, and that she had everything she needed to save her family. Aunt Beast was Meg's ruby slippers, and she was nowhere to be found. I hope someday we find a director who truly loves this story. See more Christian G @chrispresario Jul 10 Visually appealing . It did not stick to the plot and significantly deviated from its main themes. Additionally, it changed the characters and motivations. Ultimately, it took out the evils of collectivism and how that affects one’s individuality, which was a main theme in the book. The acting was also horrible despite Storms doing fine. Everyone else was not given much to work with which left the viewer alone without characters to identify with. The CGI was also distracting, making the whole thing fake. What an embarrassment the whole production was and it goes to show how Disney can mess up good ideas when they choose to change them to fit their own narrative agenda. Saw on Disney. See more Eye C @ECinc Jun 2 I don't know why there was such a bad talk about this movie, I mean, is not the greatest but definitely not the worst of the worst. To start is a kids movie, so let put the bar there we can't expect more from this, and beside that it gives a nice message. The only thing that I don't really like about it was this constant over use of the green screen that makes the places way too unreal, other than that I kind of like it. It is crazy to me that these talented actors and film makers can make a movie so bad. I thought that people just were just being mean to Oprah or something, but the truth is that this movie is just plain bad. Editing, terrible. Storytelling, bad. Characters I neither understood nor cared about. Acting, really really bad. I couldn't understand why the acting was so bad. The music throughout the movie was always soaring. But if every scene has that style of music...then nothing soars. I really did not understand how this movie got made. Or worse how no one tried to stop it from being released. Thankfully the people involved with this debacle recovered and went on to continue to make good films...but this one ain't it. See more Read all reviews
