Critics Consensus

It may not deliver as many straight-up scares as genre fans expect, but Agnes takes a gratifyingly unusual approach to well-worn territory.

B

For all of its ruffled habits and bleeding eyes, Agnes is far sadder than it is scary (quite, versus not at all), and often sillier than it is sad.

More than the surprising and sometimes absurd comedy, the discussions and genuine explorations of faith are what make Agnes different.

Reece ambitiously flips the movie into a heart-bending moment that focuses on the life of Mary, the one who needs special care from her superiors.

While the movie tries to be clever with its dramatic shift in tone and completely new direction, it ends up feeling like two different films connected by the barest of threads. Even worse, neither story gets any kind of satisfying ending.

The director and writer got wasted halfway through the making of this movie. That's literally the only explanation I have for this....

Just a directionless and uneventful film where scenes were slapped together and called a film. Agnes, the namesake of the film, is barely on screen. The film can't decide if it wants to be a horror movie or a thought-provoking drama about faith, and succeeds at neither. The film made me think that the director is the only person who knew what he was trying to say. Ugh.

Not a horror film. Not a suspense film. Not a thriller. Honestly I’m not sure what that was exactly, besides an epic waste of 1.5 hours of my life that I genuinely regret I’ll never reclaim. INCREDIBLY BORING AND FORGETTABLE. There was no continuity in who the main character was from beginning to end. Clearly the writers/director were trying to make a point/statement, but I honestly have no idea what that was. Was the demon a figment of everyone’s imagination? What happened to sister Agnes? Why is the movie even named sister Agnes when it appears to follow Sister Mary’s day to day at menial jobs after the convent, for the most part? What happened to the other priest? The movie left so many questions open ended, which maybe I’d want the answer to, if they were more compelling and if it was a better movie. But all this movie inspired me to do was take the time to write this review to warn others not to waste their time watching it, like I did.

Just a horrible pile of vomit!!!! Not a horror film. Why Netflix picked this up blows my mind.

Definitely put the horror in horrible. That doesn’t even make sense, but somehow makes more sense than the movie. I did like Mary, and had some cool shots, but that’s where it ends

If I could give this zero stars I would. I like dumb movies most people hate, this was like two movies mashed together that never concluded anything, horror stopped before it started. I hope the director never finds work again, sooooo bad
