What to Know

Critics Consensus

If its chilly sense of dread never quite becomes spine-tingling terror, Amulet remains smart, solidly disquieting fun for genre fans seeking slow-building horror.

A moody, brooding chiller that goes from slow-boil creaks to rapturous, hallucinogenic madness. Go to Full Review Kevin Maher The Times (UK) Jan 28, 2022

Though the performances are less than memorable, and the narrative would certainly collapse under the weight of even low-level scrutiny, Garai nonetheless emerges as a formidable stylist. Go to Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Jan 27, 2022

This chamber-horror oddity from the English actress-turned-auteur is too weird, too wonky; intermittently gross, and often gruelling. Go to Full Review Josh Parham Next Best Picture Jun 5, 2022

Unfortunately, the story finds itself lacking in successfully crystalizing many of its muddled themes along with its inconsistent world-building. Go to Full Review Maria Lattila FILMHOUNDS Magazine Feb 4, 2022

It may not be perfect and it includes some questionable narrative choices, but Amulet is still directed wonderfully by Garai. Go to Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Feb 3, 2022

With her feature writing-directing debut, Romola Garai creates an oppressively creepy atmosphere in which a nasty horror mystery plays out. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Robert P @Superbad Oct 5, 2026 Amulet is a *3* star Movie! See more Ian S @RT48225084 Mar 16, 2026 The atmospheric first half unfortunately was diluted by the more dramatic second half. Well performed by the the three lead actors and visually stylish. An interesting film but could have been much better. See more Stephen G @patient1 Sep 25, 2025 Couldn't imagine what PTSD is like, but our main character seems to have it and it's night Terrors possibly. Has an old Hammer Films vibe throughout its running. As many soldiers who return from service, ours is homeless and suffering still. Adjusting to normal home living seems to be possibly welcome yet foreign to him as he's been out 2 years according to his statement to the nun who found him unconscious in an alley after a fire broke out at the homeless encampment. The home itself is old and dilapidated. Our soldier being handy, he tries to help around the home under some protest that "he doesn't need to". The Home itself has an eerie feeling to it and seems a bit old world, but kinda looks homey in a strange way. This has got to be one of the most bizarre and yet still very intriguing at the same time as I am unable to figure out how this will play out. This has been a total mind manipulation and massacre of commen thought process. The old Gods can deal out some painfully terrifying ordeals to be sure. This is a rewatch for sure... See more M E @Melbe997 Jul 4, 2025 Very not good could have been worse. See more kevenquinlan T @RT75276071 Apr 25, 2025 Awful. This is when some director is known in the cinema meets art sect and they give them the benefit of the doubt. Not only is the movie nonsensical= it's slow and boring. I laugh at all of the positive reviews- you people must not value your time very much if watching this was worth it, hahaha. See more Andrew W @RT88934443 Oct 28, 2024 It was interesting and had the potential to be something special, like Let Me In. But in the end, the payoff was okay but not fully developed.
