Critics Consensus

Arthur's boozy charm curdles into a bad hangover in this unnecessary sequel.

The excruciating "Arthur 2 on the Rocks" should come with a surgeon general's warning: "This sort of stupidity may sap your will to live or to watch movies ever again."

Not as classy a farce as the original, but still manages to be an amusing romp for most of its length.

A romantic comedy with a fatal flaw: it's rarely funny.

Believe it or not, things get even worse as the film moves towards its predictable happy ending. You have been warned.

Rotten Tomatoes is pretty good, but they are hit and miss sometimes. If you are a hopeless romantic, then by all means, watch this movie. It is actually better than the first one.

This sequel should have been titled Arthur 1/4: Off the Bandwagon.

Dudley Moore's titular character remains iconic, but Arthur 2: On the Rocks is dry on laughs and poor in ingenuity.

I've watched this several times on TV and more recently on DVD. It's not as bad as the critics would have you believe. I enjoyed revisiting Arthur's world, picking up where the first film left off. It is nowhere near as good as the first film, but I liked the Arthur character, and this film shows how he moved on. It's very rare for a sequel to be as good as the original but this was not a terrible movie, and I'm glad it got made. For anyone who enjoyed the first movie, it is something worth watching in my opinion.

Even dumber and less funny than the original.
