Critics Consensus

Bedknobs and Broomsticks often feels like a pale imitation of a certain magical guardian and her wards, but a spoonful of Angela Lansbury's witty star power helps the derivativeness go down.

Angela Lansbury's zany feature is just as enchanting as it was in 1971 and more radical than some may remember. Go to Full Review Derek Malcolm Guardian Feb 11, 2020
David Tomlinson does his English Fred MacMurray act rather well, Miss Lansbury is as watchable as always and the children aren't too awful. It'll take a mint of money, but not mine. Go to Full Review Karen Han Polygon Dec 22, 2018
In its indulgence of extremes, Bedknobs and Broomsticks becomes unwieldy, but also capable of reaching unforgettable heights. Go to Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Jan 29, 2022

See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Dec 12, 2025 Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks remains a charming piece of fantasy filmmaking, filled with warmth, whimsy, and a bright sense of imagination that still resonates today. The film’s magical energy draws you in from the start, creating a world where spells, adventure, and humor blend with ease. Angela Lansbury delivers a graceful and engaging performance, while the child actors bring sincerity and heart that deepen the story’s emotional core. The musical numbers are sweet and uplifting, giving the film an added layer of joy even when they aren’t all instantly memorable. Its mix of live action and animation retains its creative spark, showcasing Disney’s ambition during the era. Though the pacing reflects its 1970s roots, the film’s kindness and imagination make it easy to sink into its warm, nostalgic glow. My one concern is that younger viewers might resist its vintage style, but for anyone willing to embrace an older classic, it remains an enchanting and lovingly crafted experience.
