Henri V @hvalmont 1 day ago Polanski locks four adults in an apartment and removes the exits. Two couples meet to settle a playground fight between their sons: Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly all liberal anguish, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz all polished damage control. What begins as mediation becomes what it was always going to be. The masks slip, the whiskey talks, and by the end everyone has said the unsayable. Adapted from Yasmina Reza's play and staged like one - one room, one afternoon, no escape. Nobody leaves unchanged, least of all the audience. The rare comedy of manners that ends in savagery and earns every step down. Four and a half stars. Why don't I go to the theatre, assuming you don't, has got to be the response. This quartet for the movie are pretty excellent, I'd say. Polanski's masterly direction ensures that the fact they never leave the apartment never becomes boring or too confining. One could add this to his famous Apartment Trilogy (Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant) as a sort of satyr-play to end the cycle. Very classical. The fact that the visiting couple miss so many opportunities to leave, that is a little contrived. But it is a fair deal of fun watching these determinedly respectful middle class people chipping away, until finally they are hurling insults across the coffee table. The setting created this claustrophobic (we need to go now, but doesn't leave) atmosphere, as one of them says something to provoke the other. A lot of key themes come out of this movie-- from gender roles affecting who they think is at fault). The ending showed that all the argument that took place didn't need to happen. An enjoyable funny movie that felt believable. See more Gareth v @geewah Aug 21, 2025 Roman Polanski’s Carnage is a sharp, claustrophobic comedy of manners that transforms a simple premise—a meeting between two sets of parents after a schoolyard fight—into a biting dissection of civility, ego, and social pretense. You can see truly professional work by the 4 actors. It's good to see when you have a spare time, it's not deep but short and laughable. See more Read all reviews
