Patric N @RT66624675 Sep 19, 2026 A very well-made movie. A new adaption of The Black Camel. Jimmy Chan was much more competent this time. But Jimmy taking a drug cigarette to use on a girl he likes is still really creepy, and so is Charlie allowing it. See more Ted B @Movieaddicted Jan 6, 2025 3.5 stars; This was a very good Charlie Chan mystery. The mystery element was well done, and there was no Birmingham Brown to add silly humor. Even the number one son played it straight. It was a good whodunit mystery in the Agatha Christie sense. See more Feb 13, 2013 Classy 1941 entry in the series, displaying an elegance not seen anymore. Great cast, beautiful sets and music; Toler is masterly, Jory is at his suavest; Huber is at the top of his form; Victor Sen Yung is at his funniest -- David Bowman, Author, THE FORGOTTEN STARS See more Oct 17, 2012 1.5: Hmm. I was prompted to watch these by an article in The New Yorker that I read a year or two ago. I wasn't expecting them to be outstanding, but I was expecting something better than this. I have now seen essentially every Charlie Chan film, or at least all that were made between 1931 and 1947 (29 films). What struck me most is that these really have more in common with a television show than a feature film. Each film is essentially the same except for the "location." I guess it makes sense as they serve essentially the same purpose. One can essentially watch every film on auto-pilot comfortable in the knowledge that one knows exactly which characters will pop up and that everything will be satisfactorily resolved in the end. They are "C" picture at best. Sidney Toler is pretty good; Warner Toland is somewhat acceptable; and the other two one picture no-names are either inconsequential or awful. It is rather ludicrous that they didn't allow an actual Asian actor to play the role, but the portrayal of African-American's is much more heinous. They certainly pale in comparison to just about every other detective picture/TV series I've ever seen. None of the films rate an individual review so this will have to suffice for all 29. See more Apr 30, 2010 Charlie Chan In Rio is another fun installment in the Charlie Chan series. All of the characters were believable, except for the maid that the number two son had a crush on. Either she couldn't act or her over-dramatization was thrown in as comic relief. I really couldn't tell. Once again I had no idea who did it until the final reveal. See more Jul 22, 2005 VERY GOOD MURDER MYSTERY. ENJOYABLE. ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THE CHARLIE CHAN FILMS IS THE HUMOROUS ELEMENTS TO THEM, IT MAKES THEM MORE INTERESTING. NICELY ACTED, GOOD RIO SETTING. See more Read all reviews
