Adored by his single mother and his little brother Sam, Charlie St. Cloud (Zac Efron) is an accomplished sailor and college-bound senior with a bright future ahead of him. When Sam dies in a terrible accident, Charlie's dreams die with him. But, so strong is the brothers' bond that, in the hour before each sunset, Charlie and Sam meet to play catch. Critics Consensus

Zac Efron gives it his all, but Charlie St. Cloud is too shallow and cloying to offer much more than eye candy for his fans.

This is supposed to be an inspirational drama about overcoming grief, but with High School Musical dreamboat Zac Efron in the title role, it keeps turning into a Tiger Beat photo spread.

There's not much on this movie's mind but photogenic healing, and making all the girls go ga-ga at the sight of Efron mewling with grief.

While the subject matter tends towards morbidity, the film-makers strive to divert us with many dappling sunsets, the blue of Ephron's eyes and a sappy melodrama that even 13-year-old girls might scoff at.

Melodramatic and off-putting, this Zac Efron drama is a complete mess.

Mainly a star vehicle, while flows akin to a Nicholas Sparks novel by dramatic tone and the other half being thematic indulgent into the source material’s supposed spirituality loosely gripped, the film impactfully delivers in envisioning grief through Efron’s continuously evolving gravitas that soulfully uplifts the picture against its illogic alignments.

A film where Efron shows a lot of range through material that feels so contrived, it's like watching a fluffy after school special. ** out of ****.
