The Bad: * Plot is slow, 2 hours is too much for the movie message, 30 minutes would have been enough. * some creatures existed just so there is someone to fight with. Was not really convincing. * Very one dimensional, one message, one way of thinking. We need movies where opinions collide. Give it your all to share each perspective even if you do not agree with it. * Logical gaps in how the other world works and how characters behave See more Jay W @RT52162311 11/21/2024 After watching "Your Name.", and absolutely falling in love, I sought out all the films of director Makoto Shinkai. True to his reputation, this film is beautifully animated. Every frame of this movie could be framed and hung in a museum; it is breathtaking. The music and voice acting are also good. This is clearly before Shinkai began his team up with the Radwimps. That being said, the music is still good, and the end credits song made it to my playlist. I won't go over the story details. A big part of what I enjoyed about the film is how much the story kept me guessing. It took a lot of wild unexpected turns that I did not see coming. The movie successfully goes through all its emotional beats. When it's sad, it's sad. The victories feel earned. The food looks delicious. And most of all, when the movie gets scary, it is intensely scary. The movie makes a lot of references to classic Miyazaki films. Stuff like "Princess Mononoke", "Nausicaa" and particularly "Castle in the Sky" are referenced in one way or another. As a big fan of those animes, I respect the homage. My only critiques would be in some inconsistent character motivations and strange world building lore. Oh, and the title is awful. Way too many words. I however will keep my words brief. At its core, the film carries an important lesson about loss, grief and healing. However, the pacing could be better, making the characters more memorable. Mimi was definitely a favourite though! See more 07/26/2022 Thankfully, the animation is fantastic, saving it from the many unresolved questions and inconsistencies. Many things happen to serve the plot, rather than logic, and in a ghibli-esque world, characters must also abide common sense and reasonable motivations. It tries to conceal the failing by wrapping it up in talks of life and death, of romance and loss, of family and mysticism. See more 04/23/2021 It's a great movie, liked it a lot.
