There’s a gnawing unease at the core of the movie that finds expression in Peter Cushing’s seething turn as the bad doctor. Go to Full Review

The creature himself is not a tragically pained or unhappy figure: he is simply violent; and the whole story is crisply told at a racy 83 minutes, and yet it is delivered with absolute seriousness and conviction. Go to Full Review

It may not completely blow you away with its telling of the usual tale alone, but with all of its other extraordinary elements thrown in on top of it, it's able to lift itself above the familiarity of the story and deliver a chilling rendition. Go to Full Review

The sensitivity of Lee's performance helps to draw out the ambiguities in Shelley's work, and the moral complexities which, acknowledged or not, are a critical component of the story's staying power. Go to Full Review

Alex B @AlexBioni Oct 9, 2026 The Cruel Doctor I really enjoy this version of Frankenstein. Peter Cushing is the standout, playing Victor as an arrogant, cruel man who only cares about himself. He even disposes of a head in acid without thinking twice. Christopher Lee is great as the monster, though he doesn't get as much to do as you might expect from a Frankenstein story. He's not as iconic here as he is as Dracula. The focus is more on Victor and his cruelty. The production design is wonderful, as you'd expect from Hammer Horror. The laboratory equipment and the water bath holding the monster are highlights. Paul being Victor's tutor adds depth, as does the love triangle, showing how little Victor cares about anyone but himself. The ending is great, too. Overall, Cushing's performance and the production design make this a great adaptation.
