Critics Consensus

Don Juan DeMarco proves that a slight story can translate to entertaining cinema if it's acted out by a pair of well-matched professionals enjoying their craft.

The film has its slow patches, and its fragile illusion probably doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. But, mostly, it dances on a very fine knife's edge between charm and absurdity, an irresistible paean to the art of kiss-kiss.

The movie itself is never as good as it should be, owing to Leven's lifeless staging.

For the film to work, we'd have to be in denial... and it's just not magical enough for that.

Mr. Brando is now a picturesque ruin, but he is just as magnetic as of old.

Ultimately, the inspiration that underlies the whole film is the magic of discovering the sublime in the superficial by dedicating one's life to living perfectly in the moment.

Before you start clutching this newspaper and panting, be aware that I am writing here about a comedy - a very rare comedy, that dares to play itself seriously and to take unusual risks.

Wasn't expecting Johnny Depp to be the subject of mental analysis in this movie - but his fantasy of being the world's greatest lover was a deep seated tale.

Movie gives a lot of perspective on how positive life and relationships can become just by viewing them differently

Its weird to see Brando in a sentimental romantic comedy. Even weirder is that he's not half bad despite that it was from late in his career. The rest of the movie is silly but I do like the fantasy flashbacks.

Perhaps the very best film nobody has heard of. I can't figure out why the critics don't love it. Probably because they've shut down their hearts, like the good doctor in this film. It's deeply moving, and funny at times as well. I watch it every year or so. Yes, it's that good. One of the very best.
